The Pulse Rifle

This pulse rifle is a fan art piece I did for an art jam at Sony. The theme of the Jam was alien and while I was working on a lot of weapons at work for another project I thought it would be fun to quickly remake the pulse rifle from Aliens. It also gave me an excuse to rewatch the movie.

All the block out and modeling was done in Zbrush using hard surface sculpting techniques. One concept that I was already aware of but that I wanted to focus and practice with for this piece early on was an attention to detail on the edge bevel widths and using variations between the bevels in the high poly sculpting phase to visually reinforce the differences between the materials. I was trying to match the bevel widths almost exactly from my references, while still keeping normal map baking limitations in mind.

Most of the green parts were given a much more rounded bevels to contrast the bevel widths of the dark gun metal parts, highlighting the differences in the metal and manufacturing process.
Low poly and texturing were done rather quickly for this piece as that wasn’t my main focus for it but I spent enough time to make it passable to show off as fan art for the art jam.
